Why Belief is a Weighty Issue

When women come to see me for help with losing weight, it’s often as a last resort.  They have been on and off diets for years and it hasn’t worked. They know what they need to do to lose weight, but something is stopping them.

That ‘something’ is usually their own subconscious, that deep part of the mind that controls much of our decision-making and behaviour. When your subconscious isn’t in alignment with your conscious desires, it can feel like you’re battling against yourself – and that’s exhausting!

So, what can you do if it feels like you’re fighting a losing battle with your weight at the moment?

I often notice that when my clients first come to see me, they don’t truly believe they can be the weight they want to be. They know how they want to be, but when they focus on this, creeping doubts start to come in. Something deep inside says, ‘You can’t do that’, ‘You know you won’t be able to keep the weight off’, ‘Why bother?’ This lack of self-belief makes it really hard work to lose weight and maintain it.

I’d encourage you to just check in with yourself now – do you believe you can be the weight you want to be?

To do this, close your eyes and imagine yourself at your ideal weight. As you do that, just notice any thoughts or feelings that come to mind. Notice the kind of things you are saying to yourself – are the words encouraging and supportive, or are you being critical?

Once you have spent a few moments doing this, think about what came to you as you did that exercise. I really hope that you are full of self-belief and only had positive, encouraging thoughts, but I know from personal experience and working with clients that we can often be very hard on ourselves. We can be positive for a while and then those doubts and criticisms start to creep in.

The great thing is, once you start noticing any negative self-talk, you can start to do something about it. Once you become aware of those thoughts and feelings that have held you back in the past, you can start to work with them and change them.

You can create shifts in your mindset and build your self-belief.

This could be a key area where you have struggled in the past.  If you have strived to be a particular weight and not been able to get there, or you’ve reached your target weight and then slipped, it is probably because you don’t quite believe you can be the weight you want to be.

So, from now on, start paying attention to your internal dialogue, particularly in relation to food, eating and the way you see yourself. If you notice anything critical or negative, just catch yourself and change it.  Simply think of something more positive and encouraging to say to yourself and use those words.  So, when you are thinking about losing weight, if you notice a nagging voice comes to mind saying, ‘You can’t do that!’,  just choose to replace that with ‘I can lose weight and I am becoming the weight I want to be right now’.

It’s likely that you won’t catch all of the negativity, but even if you can start to shift some of it, this will make a powerful difference.

Make a decision now to grow your self-belief. I guarantee it will make a difference.

Planting Seeds

19 Mar

I was running a weight loss and wellbeing workshop at the weekend and one of the exercises I asked the participants to do was to imagine their intentions, their goals, as seeds.  I asked them to close their eyes and imagine planting these intention seeds in the ground, patting them into place and giving them some water.

At the end of the day, when we had spent time discussing what was going to move them forward and what was going to support them with their goals in the future, I asked them to come back to their seeds and notice any differences.  Some had a few shoots of growth coming up through the ground and some had a small plant with flowers.  The day had given them the beginnings of what they needed to allow their intentions to grow and become real.   As we ended the workshop, I asked them to think about what they would need from now on to continue growing their intentions, what would nurture their goals?

This was a very powerful exercise and fits very well at this time of year.  20th March is the Spring Equinox, when night and day are the same length and we move into the season of growth.  This is a wonderful time to be making the changes and transformations you want to.

Over the next few days, why not take some time to think about your intentions for the rest of the year?  Give yourself some space to do this and write down what you would like to achieve.  Then, when you know what you want to move towards, close your eyes and imagine planting those precious seeds, one for each intention or goal.

By doing this exercise, you are sending a strong message to your subconscious mind, letting it know what you want, how you want things to be different.  Once you have sent this message, this deep, powerful part of your mind will start finding ways to get you there.

Maybe you want to lose weight, give up smoking, become more confident, overcome some block that is holding you back – whatever you want to change, just plant the seed now and see how it grows.

Unburden

5 Feb

An experience I had today has led me to think about how often we can be carrying things that are really not helpful.  I have been driving around with a massage couch in the back of my car for the last couple of weeks – I had visited a friend to give her a well-deserved massage and rather than lifting it out of my car as soon as I got home, I thought ‘oh, I’ll just do it later’.  And of course, it stayed banging around in the back of my car, getting in the way, causing me to use more petrol and generally irritating me every time I went to drive somewhere.

Silly eh?   Why didn’t I just take it out straight  away?  Why did I put up with this extra burden when I could have cleared it away?  Well, today I finally moved the couch back into my house and I felt better immediately.  My car has more space and I know I won’t have that nagging feeling whenever I go to drive.

So, you may be thinking, why is Nicola telling us this?  Well it got me thinking about all the things we carry with us in life that are not helpful – maybe it’s extra physical weight, emotional issues, worries or anxieties, perhaps it’s a cluttered environment that we live in.  All of these things hold us back in some way, they niggle us and take up our energy.  And do you know what?  We can choose to put them down.  We can choose to clear some space and unburden ourselves.

Imagine how it would be to put down that weight you’ve been carrying, emotionally or physically – the relief you would experience.

Well,  I can help with that.  Using hypnotherapy we can work together to let go of anything you’re carrying that isn’t serving you.  So, what would you like to clear away?  Contact me and find out how I can help.

And, if it’s physical weight you want to let go of, then I am starting a special online programme which is the perfect solution.  Click here for more details and to sign-up.

Christmas Weight Loss Tip – Nurture Yourself

3 Dec

This is the third of my special Christmas weight loss tips and it’s a wonderful way to help combat emotional eating.

My suggestion is to find one thing to do each day that nurtures you, something that is just for you and makes you feel good.  Some ideas are:

  • make yourself a cup of your favourite tea and take the time to drink it mindfully
  • run yourself a scented bath with candles
  • go for a walk in the park and feel the benefit of being outside in nature
  • book yourself a massage
  • take a yoga class
  • spend 20 minutes reading that book you’ve been meaning to

The list is endless!  Try and find something different each day that nurtures you.  By taking the time to do this, you will feel calmer and more balanced.  This means that there won’t be the need for emotional eating.  Your focus will be on looking after yourself.

The more you nurture yourself, the better you’ll feel!  Do let me know what nurtures you and we can all inspire each other to look ourselves in a healthier way.
