Why 1-1 hypnotherapy is SO different from just listening to a CD (or reading a book).

woman listening to musicApologies for the long title to this blog post, but this week I am on a bit of a rant (only a bit, I don’t do huge rants generally!)

Recently I was reading some reviews on Amazon for Paul McKenna’s Hypnotic Gastric Band book and CD and although many of the reviews were positive, I was struck by one in particular.  This woman said it hadn’t worked, but at least it had saved her money as she had previously been planning to go and see a therapist for a hypno-gastric band.  Because she had read the book, listened to the CD and didn’t have the desired results, she was ruling out getting individual help.

That’s fair enough.  I don’t expect everyone to want to work with a hypnotherapist.  However, if you want results, if you want to address your unique needs, then one-to-one is absolutely the way to go.

Reading self-help books is fantastic (it’s one of my favourite pastimes actually!), but the only way to make a change is to take action.  I must admit, I often find myself reading books that have suggestions and exercises in them and most of the time, I don’t do them.  Obviously, the change I am reading about is just not important enough for me to take action.  That’s okay.  I enjoy the book and I will take something from it, but if I don’t fully engage then I won’t receive the best results.

I haven’t read Paul McKenna’s Hypnotic Gastric Band book, but I’m sure that has action points in it too, suggestions on things to do differently.  The fact is, those who don’t implement the suggestions won’t get the results they want.  Simple.

How about listening to a hypnosis CD?  These can be very useful.  CDs can help you to relax and work with specific issues.  However, a CD won’t be specifically tailored to you.  It won’t use your language and it won’t address your individual needs.

I was speaking to a friend the other day who had used hypno-birthing CDs prior to having her baby and although she had found them useful, when it came to her personal labour experience the CDs didn’t fully meet her needs.  She wished she had booked some one-to-one hypno-birthing with me.

When I work one-to-one with a client, I don’t go straight into the hypnosis part of the process.  The first (and hugely important) step is to talk.  I ask the right questions so that we can get to the core of the particular issue we are working on.  Often talking about and exploring a problem can be transformative in itself.

Once I have the information I need, we move into hypnotherapy and often this can be a two-way process with me asking the client questions under hypnosis.

Every part of the process is tailored to the individual client and this is how we achieve big changes and shifts, often very quickly.

How Positive Affirmations Can (Really) Help You!

BelieveI’m sure you have heard about positive affirmations – a statement which you repeat either out loud or in your mind in order to reprogram the subconscious mind, helping to bring about a desired outcome.

Maybe you are even using them at the moment?  Perhaps you have a phrase or a number of phrases which you repeat to yourself to help you reach a particular goal?

I love positive affirmations – I use them personally and I often recommend them to clients.  They certainly can be a powerful way of focusing and directing our subconscious mind.  However, it’s important to recognise when we are using affirmations as a kind of sticking plaster.  What do I mean by ‘sticking plaster’?  Well, sometimes we may endlessly be repeating a positive affirmation, for example, ‘I am effortlessly becoming the weight I want to be’, when underneath we are thinking, ‘Oh come on, I’m never going to do it.  I’ve never managed to lose weight before, so why would I now?  I just can’t do it.’  You can see that in this situation the affirmation is just sitting on top of the negativity underneath.

I was speaking with a client about this recently.  She is coming to me to help reach a particular goal and was telling me how she has positive affirmations on post-it notes around her house.  This is a great idea as each time you see them, it reinforces the positive statement.  However, when we talked a bit more, it was clear that she had a bundle of negative thoughts and feelings going on which were getting in the way of her truly believing and embodying the affirmations.

So, what can we do about this?  How can we clear away any negativity so that we can use positive affirmation to change our mindsets and our feelings?  One of the best ways I have found is to use Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT).  EFT works by tapping on different parts of the body to shift any unhelpful thoughts or beliefs.   If you haven’t experienced the technique, you may think this sounds a bit strange (tapping on different parts of the body can change my thoughts and feelings?!), but it really works.  EFT can help you to transform your perspective, gain clarity and shift limited thinking.

When we use EFT to clear the way for our positive affirmations, the effect is powerful.

Expand your possibilities with OCTOBER-fest

ExpandRecently I read that 95% of our thoughts each day are the same as the previous day and, on average, 85% of those thoughts are negative.  I have heard this fact before, but it really struck me this time.  If we are thinking pretty much the same thoughts each day, then we are going to end up making the same choices, feeling the same, staying in the same place in our lives.

The work I do always relates to some sort of change and I know that many of us feel uncomfortable with change, as our thinking gets stuck in a particular pattern.

I wanted to find a way for you to start expanding your thinking, to become more comfortable with the possibility of change.  To do this, I have come up with OCTOBER-fest (and it’s nothing to do with beer!)

Over on the Horizon Hypnotherapy Facebook page, each day during October I will be asking a different question designed to expand your sense of possibility.  Questions are a great way of getting us to think about something different.  Once we are asked a question, our powerful subconscious mind has to find an answer, so it will go on a quest to come up with one.

The questions I will be asking this October are all designed to get you thinking about what positive change you want to bring into your life, to think about what is possible and to break out of the limited thoughts we often have from day to day.

As an example, the first question is:  What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail?

Notice how you feel as you ask yourself that question.  Maybe you experience a sense of excitement?  What comes to mind?  Is there a project you’ve been putting off because of the fear of failure, or not being good enough? What could you do today to start taking action, a small step?  Obviously one question leads to another!

So, how do you join OCTOBER-fest?   You simply need to like the Horizon Hypnotherapy Facebook page and each day you will see the question that has been posed.  You can either answer in the comments box on Facebook or perhaps you could make October a month to start a journal and write about each question in that?

Three Common Misconceptions About Hypnotherapy

http://www.dreamstime.com/stock-image-time-now-2-image1543231When people come to me for hypnotherapy, they often have some anxiety about how it will be and I wonder whether perhaps you feel the same?

Maybe you have seen stage hypnotists who seem to take control of people getting them to do silly things and make fools of themselves?

Maybe you have heard stories of people going into a trance and not being able to come out?

Perhaps you have seen films where people have been hypnotised into doing things they wouldn’t dream of normally?  No wonder there can be some fear of hypnosis when it is often presented in this way!

It’s completely natural to have worries about trying something new, so I want to put your mind at rest now about some of the common misconceptions of hypnotherapy.

1) I’ll be out of control.

When you are in hypnosis, you are totally aware of what’s happening.   As a hypnotherapist, I cannot ‘make’ you do anything you don’t want to do.   That is why before we use hypnotherapy, I will spend some time making sure you are committed to the changes you want to make and exploring any unexpected benefits of staying the way you are.  Your subconscious mind has some powerful built-in safeguards and will not allow you to do something you wouldn’t ordinarily do or reveal anything that is not to your benefit.

During hypnotherapy you will be fully in control.   I am simply facilitating you in bringing your subconscious mind into alignment with your goals and dreams.

2) I can’t be hypnotised.

Clients often worry that they won’t be able to be hypnotised or that hypnotherapy won’t  work for them.   In fact, we move into a trance-like state naturally at many times during the day.   For example, if you have ever driven somewhere familiar, got to your destination and not remembered the journey, then you have experienced trance.  Similarly, when we daydream or switch off when watching TV, then we have gone into a light hypnotic trance.

Clients are often surprised about how familiar hypnosis feels to them and they worry that they are not ‘doing it right’.  The fact is that as a client, you can simply relax and allow me to guide you into hypnosis.  Your subconscious mind will do the rest.

3) Hypnotherapy will magically allow me to achieve my goals.

I’m sorry to say that this isn’t true!  Even though hypnotherapy is wonderfully effective in helping with many problems and issues, you do need to be committed to making changes.  When I work with clients, it is very much a two-way process.  I will often ask people to do ‘homework’ between sessions with the aim of giving the subconscious mind the focus and direction it needs.  I have found that it’s the clients who are most engaged in the process of working with me who get outstanding results.  So, ask yourself, ‘Do I really want to make this change and am I willing to do everything I need to do to reach my goal?’  If the answer is ‘Yes!’, then hypnotherapy will be perfect for you.

Planting Seeds

I was running a weight loss and wellbeing workshop at the weekend and one of the exercises I asked the participants to do was to imagine their intentions, their goals, as seeds.  I asked them to close their eyes and imagine planting these intention seeds in the ground, patting them into place and giving them some water.

At the end of the day, when we had spent time discussing what was going to move them forward and what was going to support them with their goals in the future, I asked them to come back to their seeds and notice any differences.  Some had a few shoots of growth coming up through the ground and some had a small plant with flowers.  The day had given them the beginnings of what they needed to allow their intentions to grow and become real.   As we ended the workshop, I asked them to think about what they would need from now on to continue growing their intentions, what would nurture their goals?

This was a very powerful exercise and fits very well at this time of year.  20th March is the Spring Equinox, when night and day are the same length and we move into the season of growth.  This is a wonderful time to be making the changes and transformations you want to.

Over the next few days, why not take some time to think about your intentions for the rest of the year?  Give yourself some space to do this and write down what you would like to achieve.  Then, when you know what you want to move towards, close your eyes and imagine planting those precious seeds, one for each intention or goal.

By doing this exercise, you are sending a strong message to your subconscious mind, letting it know what you want, how you want things to be different.  Once you have sent this message, this deep, powerful part of your mind will start finding ways to get you there.

Maybe you want to lose weight, give up smoking, become more confident, overcome some block that is holding you back – whatever you want to change, just plant the seed now and see how it grows.
