Olympic Inspirations

2 Aug

I’m sure many of you have been watching the Olympics over the past few days and I have been struck by the dedication, motivation and also the creative thinking of many of the athletes involved.  It’s prompted me to think about ways in which we can use these qualities in our lives to make the changes we want to.

Ok, so most of us don’t see ourselves as elite athletes, but we can still incorporate aspects of what they do in our everyday lives .   Just by watching our Olympic heroes pushing themselves to their limits, we are making a real difference to our mindsets.

A friend of mine told me that he was in the gym on the cross-trainer when watching Bradley Wiggins take gold in the cycling time trial.  He is a regular gym-goer and was surprised that as he watched Bradley winning the race, he was able to work at a harder level on the cross-trainer, for a longer period of time, without even thinking about it.  Usually this would feel like really hard work, but he was unconsciously inspired to do more.

It doesn’t matter what we want to achieve, whether it is getting fitter, eating more healthily, making a change at work or having better relationships, watching these amazing athletes shows us that anything is possible.    A wonderful example of this is Helen Glover, who only took up rowing four years ago and is now an Olympic gold medallist.  What would you like to achieve in the next four years if anything was possible?  What small step can you take towards that achievement today?  Why not go and do it now?

I’d love to hear about what you’ve been inspired to do….and if you would like some support on your journey, why not get in touch and find out how I can help you?

Why It Helps to Take ACTION

27 Jun

Sometimes we just know we want to make a change.  It’s that niggling thought at the back of your mind, an uncomfortable feeling in your stomach – something needs to be different.  Maybe we want to lose some weight, give up smoking, let go of something from the past or work towards a life change.  It’s easy to spend a lot of time thinking about the changes we want to make.  Reflection is great and I encourage all of my clients to devote some space to thinking about what they want and how things will be different when they get that.  However, it’s important to combine this with taking ACTION.

When we spend too much time thinking, it can be difficult to see a way forward.  We can feel stuck and demotivated and that’s not a good place to be!   Just  taking one small action can change this mindset; we start to feel more empowered and in control.  I often find this with clients who have been struggling with something for a long time; as soon as they make the decision to come and work with me, they immediately feel more positive.  They’ve committed to take some action and that feels good!

So, what can you do today to move forward?   Let me know what action you are taking and if you would like some support, why not book a free 30 minute consultation and find out how I can help?

The Beauty of Paying Attention

12 Jun

I am reading Julia Cameron’s wonderful book The Artist’s Way at the moment and one of the things she talks about very eloquently is the value of paying attention to what’s around you.

Often we can be rushing around from one thing to the next, barely noticing the people, places and natural beauty that surrounds us.   This can result in feeling stressed and disconnected, damaging  relationships and our own well-being.  If we can learn to slow down, even occasionally, and pay attention to what is happening around us right now, it can be immensely healing.  Life will automatically feel more manageable and you will gain a sense of perspective.

We can often miss so much as we simply don’t take the time to notice.  Recently I watched the television programme Britain in a Day which was made up from snippets of film that a range of different people captured, showing what they did on a particular day.  Much of this was the ‘ordinary’ stuff that we all do all the time, however, this ordinary-ness was what made it funny, moving and quite remarkable.

It’s easy to dismiss the people and things that we see all the time as  boring and not worthy of our attention, but if we just take the time to notice we might realise that we’re surrounded by beauty.  Why not try paying attention right now and let me know how you get on?

Finding Your Motivation

26 Mar

Many of the people who come to me for hypnotherapy say they need to increase their motivation.  So, what is this mystery quality that helps us to achieve our goals more easily and how can we tap into it?

There are a couple of tools that I find useful when looking to increase motivation.  Firstly, find a goal or outcome which is really going to inspire you.  I wanted to get fit and tone up this year for a big social occasion and I thought that would be enough to encourage me to eat healthily and exercise more, but it didn’t; I needed something more to stimulate me into action.  So, I decided to enter the Great South Run which is taking place in October.  I knew that by having an event to train for, I would stick to my fitness plan and make time to go out running.

So, what do you need to motivate you?  Do you like to do things with other people – many people find it easier to stay on track if they have the support of others.   It can help to make a commitment to achieve a particular goal and to let others know about it, keeping them up-to-date with your progress and letting them know how well you are doing.

If you prefer not to share your goals with others, then how about finding your own internal personal motivator?  I find that people often have a critical voice inside that tells them that they can’t do it, they are destined to fail, so why bother?  No wonder we find it difficult with that constant criticism and negativity in our minds!   So, decide to make a switch.  Imagine you have your own personal motivator in your mind.  Create an image of what that inspirational person or character looks like, notice how they sound and what kind of things they say to you.  Practice bringing in your internal motivator whenever you can and if that negative voice creeps in, then sweep it away with your new positivity!

There are lots of ways of increasing your motivation to get where you want to be.  I often find that just by making the choice to come for hypnotherapy, clients are a big step closer to achieving the outcome they want as mentally they have already committed to it.  So, why not let me know what you want to change and what helps to encourage you?

Wedding Weight Loss

7 Feb

I have been spending a lot of time in bridal shops lately and have been struck by the number of brides who want to lose weight for their wedding.  We all want to look and feel our best on special days, so I thought I would share some of the tips I use with my clients.

1) Create an image of how you want to be.  Take some time to imagine in your mind just how you want to look.  Make the image as detailed as possible, see the clothes you are wearing, how you are standing and let the colours be as bright and vivid as possible.  Take some time each day to focus on this image – your subconscious will automatically start working towards it!

2) Get in touch with your hungry feeling.  Many of us aren’t even aware of how hungry feels – we eat for lots of other reasons; stress, boredom or to give ourselves a treat.   Make a decision to only eat when you are truly hungry – do this for one week at first and the habit will spread.

3) Eat mindfully.  Quite often, we will be eating when we are doing other things – watching the TV, reading a magazine or surfing online.  When we do this, we don’t even notice what we are eating.  Allow yourself to enjoy your food, sit down and devote your attention simply to eating.  This will help you to stay in touch with your hungry feeling and stop when you are full.

These are just a few of the ways I work with my weight loss clients.  If you have a special occasion coming up that you want to feel your best for, I’d love to help you achieve it!
